The test cells are made of stable, highly insulating plastic and are closed by a swiveling, transparent cover. The built-in safety switch is used to lock the hood and release the high-voltage sources. This ensures that no high voltage is active when the door is open. Since the rise time of IGBTs are in the range of a few tens of nanoseconds (between 50ns-200ns), even short cables between PWM motor drives and motors cause voltage doubling at the motor terminals due to Travelling Wave Phenomenon as in transmission lines. The insulation of motor windings are prone to failure due to high voltage spikes if necessary precautions are not sufficiently taken. Directional Impulse Detector
The Directional Impulse Detector ( D.I.D.) is a compact handheld detector used to locate primary cable faults by sensing the magnetic field generated by the current pulse from a high voltage discharge device (thumper). A meter deflection indicates the intensity of the received signal. No deflection indicates that you have walked beyond the fault or away from the cable.
